Meet Brian Colahan, a key member of the Biomedical Technology Services (BTS) team in Bundaberg. Brian has been working closely with the architects on the design of the new Bundaberg Hospital, ensuring that all the latest medical technologies are seamlessly integrated into the building's layout. His expertise helps create a space where healthcare professionals can deliver the best care using the most advanced equipment.
What does your role entail and how have you contributed to the design discussions?
I played a role in ensuring the design was both practical and efficient for biomedical technical services. By reviewing proposed layouts and operational flows, BTS helped to ensure that the facility could operate smoothly and meet the needs of its users. BTS helped the architects understand the specific requirements of a larger facility, leading to more informed and effective design decisions.
BTS's ability to provide technical input and advice, both locally and from across BTS Queensland, was invaluable in shaping the development of the BTS areas. This collaborative approach ensures that the final design is well-suited to the operational needs and can support efficient service delivery.
Why do you believe it’s important to involve local hospital staff and patients in the design of the new hospital?
The success and impact of BTS Bundaberg over the past nine years has allowed our team to become a vital part of the healthcare system, ensuring that medical equipment is always in top condition and supporting clinical operations effectively.
Developing a deep understanding of departmental workflows and where technical support is most needed is crucial for maintaining high standards of care. BTS's collaborative efforts in acquiring, repairing, and maintaining equipment efficiently contribute to better patient outcomes and smoother clinical operations.
What did you enjoy most about participating in the design workshops?
What I enjoyed most about the design workshops was the collaborative nature, bringing together diverse perspectives to work toward a common goal. The synergy from different ideas and expertise often led to innovative solutions. Each workshop was a chance to learn something new, whether it was understanding the needs of different departments or discovering new technologies and best practices.
It was fulfilling to know that BTS contributions could directly influence the design and functionality of the project, with ideas and feedback making a real difference. The process of developing an allocated space from a draft plan into a three-dimensional drawing was both challenging and rewarding.
These workshops also provided a great opportunity to build relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
Which design elements do you think will most improve patient care or staff wellbeing?
The proposed design features, such as large windows to maximize natural light, will help to improve mood and reduce stress for both patients and staff. Views of nature and green spaces will also have a calming effect.
The adaptable design, which allows spaces to be reconfigured for different uses, will enhance efficiency and accommodate evolving needs. Providing quiet or meeting rooms for staff will improve functionality and support staff wellbeing.
Additionally, integrating advanced medical technologies like telemedicine, electronic health records, and smart room features will improve patient care and operational efficiency.
What excites you most about seeing the hospital come to life?
The new hospital will greatly enhance healthcare services and improve the community's quality of life, which is deeply rewarding. It's exciting to see how innovative design and advanced technology will improve patient care and operational efficiency.
The collaborative effort of all stakeholders—architects, engineers, healthcare professionals, and community members—is truly fulfilling, showcasing the dedication of everyone involved. Knowing that the hospital will offer a comfortable, healing environment for patients is a major highlight, promising improved experiences and outcomes for patients and families.
It's also exciting to see the positive impact on staff wellbeing and efficiency. A well-designed hospital can significantly improve job satisfaction and performance for healthcare workers. The integration of sustainable, future-proof design elements is inspiring, and will ensure the hospital can adapt to future challenges while meeting current needs.
What will the new hospital mean for the community?
This project will provide the community with enhanced healthcare services, improved patient experiences, and a state-of-the-art facility that supports both current and future medical needs.
Finally, how do you maintain your health?
By trying to maintain a healthy diet with regular exercise and a manageable work life balance.
