My first clinical coach experience

WBHHS has rolled out the Clinical Coach position, redefining the training approach for graduate nurses.

During their inaugural shift together Monto Clinical Coach Jennifer Calderon and Post Graduate Registered Nurse (PGRN) Mikayla Quinn, showcased early triumphs within the program.

Jennifer described her first shift in the role as rewarding.

"It was a fulfilling experience to see Mikayla achieve her goals in a clinical setting."

Jennifer emphasised the importance of meticulous preparation, guiding Mikayla through protocol details as the pair completed a blood transfusion.

“Though early signs of an adverse reaction were observed and had to halt the procedure, my presence and guidance had provided her with reassurance to deal with the situation calmly and properly,” she said.

“I appreciated the role of a clinical coach on this instance as I was able to facilitate a supportive learning environment to our graduate nurse in real time by being able to identify her learning needs and provide guidance as required.”

Mikayla said having Jennifer there during the start of her career has led to her feeling supported and confident.

“As a post graduate Registered Nurse, it can be daunting to encounter new experiences,” she said.

“As a clinical coach, Jeni guided me to locate and understand the relevant policies and protocols prior to the commencement of the infusion.

“Following the experience, Jeni encouraged me to thoroughly reflect on the event and consider how this learning experience can be used to improve future practice.”
