This month the Fraser Coast Mental Health Unit celebrated a significant milestone—its first birthday!

Over the past 12 months, the unit has provided vital care and support to nearly 500 consumers, making a meaningful impact on the community’s mental health and well-being.

Acting Programs Manager Daniel Barns reflected on the achievements of the past year, highlighting the expansion of services and programs that have enhanced patient care.

"With the implementation of the new inpatient unit, we’ve been able to integrate a number of new services that provide comprehensive support to our consumers,” he said.

“These include an onsite kitchen with a chef preparing ready-made meals, helping to create a homely atmosphere while catering to dietary needs.

“We’ve also introduced an onsite exercise physiologist, which allows consumers to engage in fitness and mobility programs.

“Since mental health challenges are often linked with metabolic conditions, this service plays a crucial role in holistic recovery."

The unit’s goal is not just to provide inpatient care but to equip consumers with skills that will aid their reintegration into the community.

"The additional services we provide help upskill our service users, giving them real-world skills they can take back into their daily lives.

“Whether it’s nutrition, exercise, or therapy, these elements contribute to a well-rounded recovery experience," Daniel said.

Feedback from both consumers and staff has been overwhelmingly positive.

Consumers appreciate the open, bright, and welcoming environment, which fosters a sense of calm and support during their recovery journey.

Staff have also benefited from the well-designed facility, which enables them to deliver high-quality care efficiently.

Looking ahead, Daniel is excited about the future.

"We hope to continue providing the excellent care that we do. Additionally, we are preparing to stand up the Older Persons Inpatient Unit in Maryborough, which will allow for greater collaboration between the two units and expanded services for our community."
