Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service’s (WBHHS) compassionate cancer care team have embarked on a campaign to collect cans and bottles for recycling, with the funds raised going directly towards supporting healthcare services in Cambodia.

The fundraising supports the work of Holistic Health Care Cambodia which is an initiative which supports the health and sanitation of girls and women in that country. It's cause close to the cancer team's heart thanks to their former colleague Theresa Beane's involvement.

Cambodia faces significant healthcare challenges, with heart, lung, liver, and neonatal diseases, diabetes, and road accidents being the leading causes of death. Accessibility to quality healthcare is limited, especially outside major cities, leading many to seek medical treatment in neighbouring countries like Thailand due to a lack of trust.

In recent years, Cambodia has made progress in both economic and healthcare recovery, but there is still much work to be done.

The WBHHS cancer care team's recycling initiative aims to make a difference by raising funds to support healthcare services in Cambodia. By collecting cans and bottles, they not only promote environmental sustainability but also contribute to wellbeing of women and girls in Cambodia.

Holistic Health Care Cambodia, which is run by an Australian nurse Leanne in Cambodia, have provided a total of 350 'Days for Girls" packs and have been teaching locals about women's health, sanitation and hand hygiene. They have also partnered with local medical organisations to provide other health and dental talks.

The team's commitment to making a lasting impact in Cambodia reinforces the importance of understanding local culture, building relationships, and earning respect. By supporting their initiative, we can all contribute to improving healthcare services and creating a brighter future for those in need.
