During NAIDOC Week, the Cancer Care Hervey Bay team created a bright display in their reception area to celebrate Indigenous culture and the NAIDOC theme 'Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud'. Team members also wore shirts with Indigenous art.
Senior Social Worker Bianca Markham said it was nice to see members of her team celebrate the week and hoped the display would help welcome first nations patients and visitors.
She plays a pivotal role in providing comprehensive support to patients and their families.
At Cancer Care Service, Bianca's responsibilities are multifaceted, encompassing emotional support, practical assistance, and care planning.
"Cancer affects every aspect of a person's life and their family's life," she said.
Bianca's hands-on approach includes everything from securing financial aid to finding housing solutions, ensuring patients feel supported during their cancer journey.
Bianca, who identifies as Aboriginal, emphasises the importance of cultural sensitivity in her work.
While her role is not specifically designated for Indigenous patients, she often connects with them, providing a familiar face and understanding that makes a significant difference in their care experience.
"It's an honour and a privilege to be allowed into people's lives during such a difficult time and to provide support," she said.
Her dedication is evident in the small yet impactful victories, like helping a palliative care patient receive his pension within 24 hours.
Bianca said a highlight of her role is being able to be a meaningful advocate for them.
