In a heartwarming effort to demystify cancer for young children, Fraser Coast author and Registered Oncology Nurse Kerrie Hepworth has published a beautifully illustrated children's book aimed at children aged 3 to 8 years.

The book, inspired by Kerrie’s professional experiences, provides a gentle and educational introduction to cancer and its treatment, helping young readers understand the illness through simple language and illustrations.

"The book follows Isabella as she learns about her grandmother's recent cancer diagnosis, what cancer is and how treatment can cause physical changes,” Kerrie said.

“This educational narrative not only aids children in comprehending the complexities of cancer but also supports families in having these crucial conversations.”

Kerrie said she had a niggling desire to write a children’s book for years but had pushed it aside.

When she eventually sat down to create the story the words just flowed out.

Acting Nurse Unit Manager of Cancer Care Fraser Coast Penelope Stevens emphasised the significance of the book.

"Meeting new patients, I often see families with young children who struggle to explain cancer,” she said.

“Kerrie’s book uses simple diagrams and words, making it easier for kids to understand. It fills a gap that current resources do not adequately address."

The initiative doesn't stop at the book's publication.

The pair are now exploring fundraising ways to distribute the book widely, starting with local primary schools, libraries, and doctors' offices.

Penelope said she hopes by making the book widely available they can create awareness so newly diagnosed patients and their families don’t panic.

“By normalising these conversations, we can provide much-needed support," she said.

Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Families and healthcare professionals alike have praised the book's simplicity and effectiveness.

"Even my family overseas and their friends in America have purchased the book,” Kerrie said.
