Meet Catherine Martin, Director of Pharmacy, Fraser Coast, who has worked closely with the design team, offering valuable feedback on everything from the layout and design of the medication rooms in Hervey Bay Hospital's new medical wards and intensive care unit to the selection of furniture, fittings, and equipment.
Can you describe your role in project user group workshops and how you contributed to the design discussions?
I have been involved in both the Hervey Bay Hospital Medical Ward 3 (modular) project and the Hervey Bay Hospital Level 2 expansion.
For the modular project, I provided feedback on the layout and design of the medication room, including the selection of furniture, fittings, and equipment.
Although the Level 2 expansion project began before I started working at Hervey Bay, since taking on the role of Director of Pharmacy I have provided feedback on recommended changes to the layout and design of the medication rooms in Medical Ward 4 and the ICU.
Why do you believe it’s important to involve local hospital staff and patients in the design of these new spaces?
From a pharmacy perspective I believe it is important to include pharmacists and clinical assistants in the layout of the medication rooms to ensure the space in the room is used efficiently, the legal requirements for medication storage are met and the shelving within the space is appropriate.
What did you enjoy most about participating in the project user group workshops?
For the modular project I enjoyed working with Alison Smith and Aimee Smith. I found both colleagues to be understanding and they had a willing ear to listen. They provided a safe space to be able to talk through any frustrations and then come up with solutions. The user group was easy to engage with and I enjoyed learning from others within that group. It's always interesting to hear about other services outside of pharmacy!
What design elements do you feel will make a significant positive impact on patient care or staff wellbeing?
The space in the modular building!
What excites you most about seeing the projects come to life?
Seeing how quickly a whole ward can be designed, manufactured, shipped in and then operational.
Please describe what these projects will mean for the community in one sentence.
Great access to an inpatient bed and less delays moving from the emergency department to the ward.
Finally, how do you maintain your health?
Walking! I love walking!
