Sally Chandler thinks everyone is a winner when it comes to volunteering.
She works as a supportive therapy volunteer handing out drinks and snacks or pulling up a chair for a chat while patients are receiving infusions at Maryborough Hospital.
“I just love taking care of people, I have always,” she said.
“You just feel good being able to help someone.
“You are there to make sure people are happy, comfortable, well fed and that they feel good.”
Sally said volunteering in supportive therapies has been a very positive atmosphere.
“The staff are happy to see you and the nurses will say thank you so much when you leave.
“The patients are having infusions which isn’t very pleasant, but they are appreciative to have you there.”
Sally said a benefit of volunteering for the health service was the variety of roles on offer.
“I don’t think it is great to stay in one job for a long time, it is refreshing to move around.
“I started on the lolly trolly, and then I did programs for people in rehab, and now I am in supportive therapies.
“I have also helped at the front desk.”
“I really recommend people try it out. I have tried different things when I was in paid work, and they weren’t for me, but you can find your fit.”
