Danika Stevenson
Senior Environmental Health Officer
How long have you been with WBHHS?
5 years
How do you describe what you do?
An environmental health officer (EHO) is responsible for managing environmental factors that pose risks to public health. This includes investigating complaint, regulating, and enforcing laws relating to public health such as communicable diseases, food safety, water quality, medicines and poisons, illicit tobacco and vapes, and radiation safety.
What’s best about your job?
Environmental health covers so many topics so no two days are the same. We inspect businesses, conduct environmental investigations, and collect samples - so there is plenty of opportunity to be out and about in the field and not just at the desk.
What was your path into health care?
At university I completed a microbiology degree but wasn’t keen on being stuck in a lab. I always enjoyed the topics of health, science, and law and discovered environmental health to be a great combination of these skills.
What does being part of a team mean to you?
Being part of a team means collaboration, support and sharing goals to work through challenges together. I’m part of a very cohesive team who value each other’s strengths, listen to others’ ideas, and are always keen to help.
When you’re not at work, you are…
Relaxing at home, walking my dog, Percy, or going to the gym.
What do you enjoy about living in Wide Bay?
I like the laid-back atmosphere, sunny climate and natural beauty of our walks and beaches.
Tell us a fun fact about you.
I am always looking forward to my next overseas trip. I have been to 10 countries and counting…
What song are you listening to most right now?
Currently in my ‘Lover’ era and can’t pick a favourite.
