First Nations Health Equity Strategy 2022-2025
Closing the Gap
Our First Nations Health Equity Strategy sets out how we'll meet our goals to make sure First Nations peoples have equal access to health care.
Our strategy supports our health services plan and the agreement on Closing the Gap. Learn more about the national agreement on the Closing the Gap website.
We developed our strategy with First Nations peoples from our community through consultations and feedback.
Our focus
Our focus areas for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health care is to:
- improve life expectancy by 2031
- increase the number of babies born at a healthy weight to 91%
- significantly reduce the number of suicides.
Our First Nations Health steering committee monitors and considers cultural factors as we work towards improving health care equity.

We acknowledge the Elders, community members, consumers, Traditional Owners, youth, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Organisations (ATSICCHOs) and leaders of our First Nations communities.
We respectfully acknowledge the First Nations people of the land on which we live, work and interact, and the strength and resilience of the participants of our First Nations Health Equity consultations.
Disability Plan 2024-2027
Our Disability Plan 2024–2027 outlines our commitment to fostering an inclusive healthcare environment and supporting individuals with disabilities. This plan is guided by feedback from our community and aligns with both the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service Strategic Plan 2022-2026 and Queensland's Disability Plan 2022-2027.
The plan aims to promote inclusion and reduce barriers for people with disabilities, their carers, and families. It provides strategies and actions to guide our work, with key performance indicators to measure success. Our approach focuses on safe, compassionate, respectful, and personalised consumer experiences.
Key Components
- Defining Disability: Emphasises the evolving understanding of disability as a complex interaction between a person’s body and society.
- Health Gaps: Addresses the significant health inequalities faced by people with disabilities, including people with an intellectual disability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Commitment to Inclusivity: Aligns with Queensland Health’s commitment to equitable healthcare for people with disabilities, including adherence to the Anti-Discrimination Act and the Human Rights Act.
